3 golden rules for every aspiring designer

Or for everyone in design.

Not long ago, I had a 15minutes session to meet a bunch of aspiring students/designers and talk something about design. Being for over 2 years in the design industry, I wanted them to know the three basic things every aspiring designer should have in mind (which I learned the hard way, by experience 😉 ). Sharing them here as well. Please feel free to add more to this in responses.

Accept Feedbacks

Being a designer is no easy task. Everyone who get’s to see your work will criticise it. They have every right to. Be prepared for all the worst feedbacks and also the constructive ones. There will always be 1–2% of the people who will never like whatever the work you put up. Accept it. Accepting both positive and negative feedbacks for your work is the only way to grow both as a person and a designer.

Design for the User

It is very easy to get carried away with our personal choices in colours, layouts and almost all the works you do. You are not the only user of the product you’re designing for. Or you might not even use it. The stakeholders know the product better but they might not be the end users as well. Design for the user or the target audience. Know their behaviour, research and analyse it, to choose the colours, layout and design the product around them. After all, it’s the users who are going to praise or criticise your work.

Keep Learning

Design is a never ending process. There will always be someone who will replace your design with a better one. So are the trends, we have seen skeuomorphism coming back lately after the era of flat designs. Make sure you keep learning and improving your works and keep up with the latest trends in design. This applies to whatever field you’re in. Learning is not a one time process.

Just 1–2%? :D Seems like everyone is a better designer than you!
I found useful to take them through the journey with me.
Try to involve them step by step will reduce the number of questions they have if you present the finalised project.
In case…

Another great article and tips, thank you! I completely agree with the first rule – accept feedback. I had been working with a beginner designer for some time and he usually could not accept it and complained a lot about that design was „changing“…
