How to handle UI scaling in games

When I started with game development just a few years ago, 4K (3840x2160) screens had a market share of 0.07% and no game was optimized for it. While full HD (1920x1080) remains by far the most common resolution today, more than 10% of users have a monitor with a higher resolution than 1080p.
