Adding a social listening feature to Spotify — a UX case study

The Challenge
Analyze an already existing and highly adopted app and incorporate a new feature into the existing product. The developed feature will be based on an area of functionality to be explored and compared to user input.

Deadline: 4 full days.

Yes, and this is how I started the week. The app that I had to work with was Spotify and the challenge was to include the possibility to listen to the same song as one of your friends at the same time. Also to have the ability to share directly the song that you are listening with another Spotify friend through the app.

1. Research & Competitors Analysis

Honestly, I never used before this product and I needed to understand who was their users and also the competitors in order to build up an idea of what I will be aiming for.

Here I share with you some insights.

2. Branding Rules & Atomic Design

In order to put realism in what I was designing, I decided to visit the Spotify website for developers. I found then all the guidelines that I should have to follow in order to design for the brand.

Following those advises, I was able to create my Atomic Design.

3. Prototype

After deciding how to accomplish the challenge, I put my hands on and to build this prototype.

Conclusion

Sometimes you don’t know the product that you are designing for. It is important to know your audience, listen to the users and follow brand guidelines in order to be aligned and put realism in what you create.
