What is the UX Collective?

We are an independent, self-funded design publication made by designers for designers. We believe designers are thinkers as much as they are makers, so we’ve decided to curate the UX and Product Design stories we’ve always wanted to read. Make sure to check out our newsletter as well.

Why should I publish with UX Collective?

We have been doing this for 10+years and we love collaborating with other designers on new articles and content for the community. If you decide to publish your article with us, you will:

What type of content does UX Collective publish?

  • Articles that add value to the design community — including posts, lists, opinion pieces, tutorials on User Experience Design, Usability, Interaction Design, Prototyping, Product Design, and other topics that relate to designing and building digital products.
  • Case studies, when they have a clear takeaway for readers and a unique approach or angle. More below.
  • We don't publish posts that are trying to sell something – whether it’s a tool, a book, a training course, tickets to an event, an app, a design studio, a website that profits from views and ads, or your professional services. For this reason, we also do not publish articles coming from brands or business profiles.

How do I submit my article?

  • Check our guidelines and make sure your article is following it.
  • Email us at hello@uxdesign.cc a link to your Medium draft or published article with a one-sentence description. We don't accept articles in other formats.
  • If you have published with us before, you can submit new articles directly via Medium (“Add to Publication” option on the top right corner while editing your article). No need to email us, Medium will notify us about it.

My article has been featured by Medium. Can I add it to the UX Collective as well?

Absolutely yes. When you add your story to a publication, you are adding a whole new audience to it (that publication’s followers). Your story will still be promoted by Medium on its homepage and theme pages.

Can I add my article to two publications?

Medium only allows articles to be published to one publication at a time. If your article has been published with a different publication, we are not allowed to request it to the UX Collective.

What will you edit before publishing my article?

  • Typos and formatting style.
  • The title, lede, and cover image to match our editorial style guide.
  • In case we want to propose more structural changes to your article, we will leave private notes in your story.
  • We will remove any affiliate program links or promotional links that are not related to the article.

I have an idea, but it's not exactly an article…

We love experimenting with different mediums and formats, like longer-form essays or with one-off projects like chatbot.fail. Maybe your content is made of several short videos. Maybe you are creating a satirical piece. Or writing an open letter. Share it with us: we are always open to different formats, channels and styles.

Do you accept case studies?

Yes, if it doesn’t feel like a portfolio piece. If you’re looking to publish your case study in a design publication and reach a broader audience, the case study needs to be rewritten to be less about your process (everyone’s process is somewhat the same), and more about your learnings and how readers (fellow designers) can apply those same learnings into their own projects.

Before submitting, we recommend reading our essay on case studies.

You can also check some examples of case studies we have published below:

Are you going to put my article behind a paywall?

Medium recently added a paywall system that authors can join if they are interested in earning money from their content. Ultimately, this decision is made by you, the author, and we are not allowed to change your settings.

My company has recently started to post content about design and I think your readers would really benefit from it — can we publish our articles with you?

No, we don’t publish content marketing pieces.

I have a publication about design and a newsletter. Can we do a partnership?

That's great! The design community has been growing super fast across the globe and we love the idea that we can build a healthy community around sharing knowledge. We have worked with authors in the past that decided to move their content to our platform or created a specific project/column with us. Drop us a line if you are interested to chat about how we can work together.

“Learn from the community, give back to the community”

About the UX Collective

A big part of what we learned in UX comes from online reading: articles, tutorials, resources, blogs. It’s all available out there, for free — and all you have to do is invest some time to dig it up.

But there’s a lot.

UX is becoming increasingly popular, and with that comes a lot of clutter, noise and disorientation. The UX Collective is our attempt at curating some of that content and giving it back to the community in a more structured and digestible way. All the costs of maintaining and running the UX Collective are personally paid by us, Fabricio and Caio.

The polar bear illustration is a reference to “Information Architecture for the World Wide Web”, one of the most famous books on UX.
