In B2B Software, the rise of Super Apps is an emerging trend that you should be aware of as a builder, investor, or startup enthusiast. Let’s understand more about the history behind Super Apps. The term “Super App” was popularized in 2018 by Connie Chan, a General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz and a former product leader.

“A Super App is something that mixes and mashes a bunch of seemingly unrelated services together in one application” (Source).

She presented the term “Super App” as a way to describe unique consumer apps that have several use cases, by offering seemingly unrelated integrations that are all built into one app. This can include merging several third party services in one app — Alipay is one example. The utility comes into play by selling different use cases through one API. Super Apps are popular in China, where they combine several consumer applications together in one. We are now seeing the increasing popularity of Super Apps across the world.
