The power of personalization in user experience
Examples of how products retain users through personalization.

Personalization has played a huge role in User Experience for quite some time now, without many users really even noticing it.
As products and services have grown to become practically on-demand, users’ need for convenience and their expectation of ease and speed grows along with it.
This means that users expect products and services to be tailored to them, and many users will now abandon products or services that don’t do this because they know they can find that level of personalization elsewhere.
That is why it’s so important to include personalization as one of the key pieces when building out the user experience of a product.
Personalization allows a product or a service to fit so seamlessly into a user’s lifestyle or routine that the user interface is almost an invisible part of the process. Through personalization the product becomes so frictionless, it doesn’t even feel like work to the user.
If none of what I’m saying is bringing anything to mind, let’s take a look at a few examples of products that have a huge focus on personalization.
- Streaming Apps — Companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube, and more have put a very strong focus on personalization. Every time you sign into any of these accounts your entire UI is built around you. Don’t believe me? Try going to YouTube.com and sign out of your account. Now, does anything on that homepage interest you? Probably not nearly as much as it did when you were signed in. Another great method of personalization that streaming apps present is the ability to pick up where you left off on a particular movie or show.
- E-commerce Apps — Amazon has this down pact. So much so that many of my and other customers’ purchases are impulse-buys due to how well Amazon knows their customers and their shopping habits.
