What I learned about UX research on Pubg mobile as a player

When I visited the Texas Military Forces Museum, I saw Tompson and K98K from World War II were the same in the Pubg mobile. It is the “aha” moment to realize the rule “Match between system and the real world” from the 10 Heuristics of Jakob Nielsen. It is a perfect inspiration to do evaluate the interface and UX design of Pubg mobile!

PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG) mobile is one of my favorite mobile video games. It is a battle royale game and contains dozens of weapons that players can pick up and use throughout the game. It is a player versus player shooter game in which up to one hundred players fight in a battle royale. Players can choose to enter the match solo, duo, or with a small team of up to four people. The last person or team alive wins the match.

1. Visibility of system status

The system should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within a reasonable time.

In the Pubg game, it is crucial to know status and feedback, thus players can know and make decisions about what interactions should execute. To be more detail, health or life meters are important. These dynamic statuses help players make a better decision on attack or defend. In the Pubg game, the bar on the bottom means 100% health and the white bar indicates the current health status. To recover health status, players need a First Aid Kit and bandages.

2.Match between system and the real world

The system should speak the users’ language, with words, phrases, and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system-oriented terms. Follow real-world conventions, making information appear in a natural and logical order.

As mentioned before, the Tompson gun on the game looks exactly the same as the real-world one. It is easy to connect the game and the real world. Moreover, people who have previous knowledge of those weapons in the real-life do not need to learn unique terms for the game, which helps their selecting weapons faster and cost-effective.

Good thought. Mobile game is indeed a special kind of product which is heavy on user experience. Besides 2D interface and 3D environment, timing also plays an important role in gaming scenario. The interface not only has to be heuristic to make sure…
